Barfield Crescent Park
Natural beauty is celebrated across Tennessee, ranging from the massive Mississippi River in the west to the Great Smoky Mountains in the east. Tennessee is fortunate in that it has a large number of local, state, and national parks. Natural landscapes that are broad and varied, family-friendly recreational activities, economical and varied lodging options, volunteer opportunities, and hundreds of interpretive programs and events are all available in national parks and recreation areas. Parks provide opportunities for people to unwind, reconnect with nature, and progress toward their physical activity goals.
Barfield Crescent Park is a popular 430-acre park in the southern section of Murfreesboro that attracts a large number of visitors. Picnic shelters, baseball and softball fields, three Little League baseball fields, a regular baseball field, four multi-use fields, seven miles of paved and dirt hiking trails, two children's playgrounds, environmental education classrooms, an 18-hole championship disc golf course, and a very active wilderness station are all available at the park. With programs such as campfire talks, interpretive hikes, river explorations, and other activities, the station hopes to provide families with an opportunity to learn more about the wilderness in which they live and play. Wild Things, Puppets on the Porch, Tales and Trails, and a variety of other topics are covered in the presentations. The hikes along the TreeMendous Tree Trail include 12 stations, each of which contains information about the plants that hikers will be able to see along the way.
There is a wide selection of parks to choose from. Some parks, such as Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park in Limestone and World's Fair Park in Knoxville, are dedicated to a significant period of history. Some parks are enormous, such as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which stretches between North Carolina and Tennessee. Some parks are specifically designed for a particular recreational activity, such as the Scott Adams Memorial Skate Park in Kingsport or the Hiwassee / Ocoee State Park in Delano, while others are general parks. The vast majority of parks are places where people can increase their physical activity. Walking around as a visitor is a common physical activity in some parks, while paddling to take in the view is a common pastime in others.
